Policosanol is a group of long-chain alcohols extracted from the waxy coating of sugar cane. It seems to decrease cholesterol production in the liver and to increase the breakdown of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is considered “bad” cholesterol due to its role in the hardening of the arteries. Policosanol helps increase HDL (high-density lipoprotein or “good”) cholesterol, while it simultaneously lowers the levels of triglycerides, or the main circulating form of fats in the blood. Policosanol reduces high blood pressure and may help weight loss. It also decreases the stickiness of particles in the blood known as platelets, which may help reduce blood clots.
