Propolis is a brown protective substance that bees make from a mixture of beewax, resins, sap, botanical compounds, and bees’ own saliva. Its name comes from the Greek pro meaning “in defense of” and polis meaning “city” – making its literal meaning “in defense of the city” (or hive). Propolis is composed of flavonoids, aromatic acids, diterpenoid acids, triterpenoids and phenols, out of which flavonoids is the most versatile component enabling functionality of propolis. Propolis has been found to contain anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties. In details, antibacterial properties in propolis may combat gingivitis and other oral problems stemming from bacteria in the mouth. It may effectively ward off cold, flu, or sore throat, and further fight external harmful bacteria including staphylococcus.
In addition, anti-inflammatory properties in propolis may help heal wounds fast and be particularly beneficial for skin regeneration of those with burn scars. Antifungal properties in propolis may assist in recovery from giardia infection, which is caused by microscopic parasites.
